Art Torres says Bustamante’s Indian gambling scam “does not pass smell test” … He’s only half right

September 04, 2003

SACRAMENTO, CA: California Democrat Party Chairman Art Torres said today that Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante’ acceptance of over $2 million from Indian gambling tribes “does not pass the smell test”. He is only half right.

“It does not pass the smell test, and it does not pass the legal test”, said Dave Gilliard, Chief Strategist for Rescue California, the group leading the recall campaign. “The FPPC needs to step in and shut this scam down.

“And the people of California deserve to know what Cruz promised in exchange for this massive illegal donation. A casino in every neighborhood? Thousands of new slots for existing casinos?

“Cruz Bustamante is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian gambling interests and that’s not a comforting thought to Californians already fed up with a state government controlled by moneyed special interests,” Gilliard said.

Democrat Party Chair Art Torres, speaking this morning on the Eric Hogue show, KTKZ 1380 AM radio in Sacramento, said that Bustamante’s acceptance of the gambling money “does not pass the smell test.”
