Soboroff Credited With Making the Alameda Corridor Project Happen (8/94)
August 5, 1994
Via FAX and U.S. Mail
The Honorable Richard J. Riordan
Mayor, City of Los Angeles
Dear Mayor Riordan:
We are delighted that agreement in principle has been reached with Union Pacific. You have a victory and we congratulate you, knowing you were directly involved. We believe it can benefit everyone.
We were pleased to be able to be of assistance in the final steps. We made concessions because we trust Steve Soboroff. You made a brilliant decision putting Steve on this matter. With his persistence, his charm and goodwill, his creative negotiating skills and perspective, and his unflappable honesty, he made a deal lesser men could not have made. Steve is a prince who will continue to be an enormous asset for you.
Please let me urge you, however, to let him honor his personal commitment to stay involved in the critical substantive negotiations. As you know from your own experience, a transaction this complex and difficult isn't done until the fat lady sings and all the documents have been signed. We have many difficult days of negotiating left and without Steve Soboroff there at important times this transaction still could flounder.
Sincerely,
R.F. STARZEL
Vice Chairman
Southern Pacific Lines
