Steve Ends A Great Term As President Of The Recreation And Parks Commission To Concentrate On Mayoral Campaign

Dear Mayor Riordan:

It has been a great honor serving the people of Los Angeles as the President of the Recreation and Parks Commission for the past five years.

Today I am tendering my resignation from the Commission, effective immediately, due to the time demands of my campaign for Mayor. I leave with confidence in the management team of the Department under the capable leadership of Ellie Oppenheim.

The park system in Los Angeles is midway through a complete rebuilding process. By virtue of acquiring new land, increasing the efficiency of our existing system, and by making "joint use" agreements with the LAUSD we have made great strides in making LA's Park system something for all Angelenos to be proud of.

I am especially proud that we have begun many anti-gang recruitment programs during the past few years, and over 40% more girls are playing sports than just a few years ago. We have increased neighborhood power by creating 153 neighborhood council Park Advisory Boards in just six months. This has revolutionized how our system is governed now from the neighborhoods "up," instead of from City Hall "down."

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve. Working with you to create a better Los Angeles has been a great experience. I am planning on continuing to show my passion for our Park system (as you did) as the next Mayor of Los Angeles!
