Soboroff Calls On State To Pay Back Los Angeles' Nearly $200 Million Power Loan

Steve Soboroff today called on the State of California to guarantee that it will pay back the nearly $200 million owed to the City of Los Angeles for bailing out the rest of the state during the energy crisis. The money is already delinquent by nearly a week.

Soboroff said: "I believe that Los Angeles has been a good neighbor to the rest of the state during the energy crisis. But, when the time comes to paying debts, I want to make sure the Department of Water and Power is repaid and the ratepayers of Los Angeles are made whole so their rates are not increased.

This is a fairness issue to Angelenos who have been waiting for a very long time to have their energy bills reduced. While the state is writing checks to keep the utility companies afloat, let's make sure that Los Angeles is not overlooked. Let's make sure that we get our ratepayer's money back.

Today I am asking the City Council to join me in making certain that the Governor and the State Legislature guarantee DWP's nearly $200 million assistance be repaid. We did the right thing as a city, now it's time for the state to do the right thing."
