"Ark Trust" Founder and America's #1 Animal Activist Gretchen Wyler Endorses Steve Soboroff For Mayor!

October 13, 2000

Dear Steven,

It is a pleasure to send you a strong "letter of recommendation" for your campaign for Mayor. You know I am a fan! And I would like to focus on a matter that happened a number of years ago wherein I became your admirer.

I found you to be a unique MAN OF ACTION. In 1992 the L.A. voters passed a Proposition to give $25 million toward L.A. Zoo improvements. Soon after, the "shopping list" submitted by the (former) Zoo Director did not include construction of a new habitat for the family of 14 chimpanzees who were living in a barren concrete enclosure! Outraged, I became one of the loudest voices protesting the list. In time, it was killed, but by the fall of '94 no new list had been compiled. Twenty-five million dollars just sitting there and the chimps languishing in a sub-standard exhibit. In September '94 I met with the then ASPCA President Roger Caras, and we came up with a reasonable solution - to invite three respected zoo directors to come to the Zoo and devise a shopping list of improvements which they deemed most worthy of tax dollars. You were the newly appointed President of the Department of Recreation and Parks Commission. You agreed to a meeting in your office, and I will never forget your absolute openness to the ideas we presented regarding the chimpanzees. You listened intently. You genuinely cared, and agreed to act promptly. No study. Action! You immediately called the City Council President John Ferraro while we sat there - and then Mayor Riordan - and within days the plan was accepted. The three directors came and guess what was on the top of their list? The chimpanzees.

In the summer of '99 the Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains opened and it is one of the finest chimpanzee habitats in America. I know it would not have been possible without the ACTIONS of Steven Soboroff. It was "a pleasure doing business with you", and I feel confident that we could expect such ACTION if you were to become mayor of our fine City.

Respectfully,

Gretchen Wyler
