Los Angeles Unified School District Break-Up Plan
Fact Sheet
  • We will never answer the demand for quality public education in this city until we confront the uncomfortable truth that LAUSD is not capable of providing quality education.

  • We can never answer the demand to build new schools, until schools districts are made into manageable sizes.

  • It isn't about bad people (working for LAUSD), it is about a bad system.

  • Despite the work of capable and well meaning superintendents, despite the efforts of dedicated board members and administrators, despite the devotion of thousands of superb teachers and principals, the LA Unified School District is simply too big and too bureaucratic to ever deliver on the promise of excellence.

  • If elected Mayor, one of Steve Soboroff's first acts will be to create a master plan to break up LAUSD and replace it with Neighborhood Schools Districts (NSD)–Neighborhood schools where parents, teachers and principals have the power to control their kids' education and to address local needs without having to go downtown for approval. Neighborhood schools, where political accountability is vested in local school districts where decision-makers are directly accountable to parents and teachers.

  • The overwhelming majority of people want to live in a city where you can greet a member of your local board of education at the grocery store or a PTA meeting. Where going to your child's parent-teacher conference is a short drive, not a two-hour trek. Where our scarce education dollars are invested in the classroom, not squandered on a self-perpetuating bureaucracy. This would ensure that a parent would not have to put their child on a diesel school bus for two to three hours a day.

  • If elected, Steve Soboroff intends to go to every neighborhood in this city to build a consensus around a master plan to break up LAUSD into smaller districts that are more manageable, and implement that plan.

  • If people of good will work together in good faith, and follow a few basic principles, Steve Soboroff believes we can find a solution that is fair to everyone.

  • New school districts will be equitable and diverse - to ensure that every school is funded at levels sufficient to meet their needs.

  • New school districts will meet high standards - to ensure that every student is fully prepared for a job or college.

  • New school districts will be independent, autonymous and will have a direct relationship with the funding source in Sacramento - to ensure that principals and teachers have the authority to make day-to-day decisions without interference from bureaucrats.

  • New neighborhood school districts must be open and accessible - to ensure that parents and community volunteers are actively involved in the education of our children.

  • New school districts must be efficient - to ensure that administrative overhead is kept to a minimum, so that more money is available for teachers' salaries, supplies and computers in classrooms.

  • New neighborhood school districts must be accountable - to ensure that parents get the best for their children and taxpayers get the most for their money.
