PERRY, HAHN ADDRESS SOUTH L.A. SENIORS Endorse each other for re-election

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
During a visit with South Los Angeles seniors, Councilwoman Jan Perry and Mayor Jim Hahn touted the accomplishments they have achieved by working together during the last three years and asked Los Angeles residents to support their re-election efforts.

“We have worked hard to improve city services in South Los Angeles,” said Mayor Hahn before a group of seniors at the Estelle Van Meter Multi-Purpose Center. “I’m proud to work in partnership with Councilwoman Perry on so many important issues: making sure that we’re caring for our seniors, working to improve community relations to effectively solve crime, and allocating more resources and services to meet the needs of the homeless. We need to continue this team effort so we can build on our progress in the next four years.”

“Mayor Hahn has demonstrated a significant interest in improving the quality of life for all of my constituents,” said Councilwoman Jan Perry. “His deep interest in improving public safety, support for senior programs, homeless services, after school programs and environmental quality have helped me to meet the needs of my constituents. We share a mutual concern about the challenges people face every day. We have worked well together to see that city departments effectively respond to meet the needs of the people living and working in my council district.”

Councilwoman Perry and Mayor Hahn have worked with community and business leaders to address the crime rate in Los Angeles, put more police officers in our neighborhoods, and restore the LAPD’s community policing program.

Mayor Hahn appointed Councilwoman Perry to represent the City of Los Angeles on the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) Governing Board. Together, they have fought for environmental justice and to pass Proposition O, which

Perry co-authored. In November 2004, voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition O, which will improve water quality and reduce the pollution in our storm drains.

Working with neighborhood advocates and local developers, Councilwoman Perry and Mayor Hahn have played a key role in the dramatic renaissance in Downtown Los Angeles, which is now home to a true residential neighborhood and is a destination for dining and entertainment. They have been strong supporters of the Adaptive Reuse program, which is converting vacant and underused historic buildings into thousands of housing units for people at all income levels. The success of Adaptive Reuse in Downtown is driving similar efforts citywide. In addition, several hundred units of affordable supportive housing will come on line in the coming year, which will increase housing opportunities for persons who are homeless and living with mental illness, substance abuse, and/or HIV/AIDS.
