MAYOR HAHN GETS MAJOR BOOSTS FROM DEMOCRATS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Hahn's re-election campaign received late last night two major boosts: the strong endorsement of the New Frontier Democratic Club, the largest and oldest African American Democratic club in California, and a decision by the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee not to endorse a candidate.

"The New Frontier endorsement recognizes my work to help every Los Angeles community by lowering crime, building housing and creating jobs," Mayor Hahn said. "I am proud to have the strong support of the New Frontier Democratic Club and look forward to working with them to win this campaign and improve the quality of life in every Los Angeles neighborhood."

"Mayor Hahn commanded strong Democratic support because of his appointment of African Americans to key city commissions, his support for economic development in the African American community, and his commitment to public safety in inner-city neighborhoods," said Mike Davis, 1st Vice President of the New Frontier Democratic Club.

"The County Democratic endorsement was an essential part of Antonio Villaraigosa's campaign strategy," Mayor Hahn said. "There are five Democrats in this race, so I think the party made the right choice in not endorsing. I feel confident about this race and am forming a winning coalition that includes Democrats, Republicans and independents."

Mayor Hahn's support among Los Angeles Democrats eliminates the second of two key pillars of the coalition Antonio Villaraigosa formed in 2001, when Mayor Hahn drew 54 percent of the citywide vote and Villaraigosa drew 46 percent. Last month, Mayor Hahn won the backing of the 800,000-member Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, which in 2001 backed Villaraigosa with support that included votes, advertising, phone banks, and campaign workers.
