MAYOR HAHN PROPOSES CHARTER SCHOOL EXPANSION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mayor Jim Hahn today unveiled a proposal to increase the number of Los Angeles charter schools.

"I am here to lead a parents' revolution for our public schools. We
need schools that are safer, smaller and with principals who know
every student's name, and that's what charter schools can deliver.
And I'm going to deliver by aggressively increasing the number of L.A. charter schools," Mayor Hahn said. "My two kids go to L.A. public schools, so I know about the challenges they and their classmates face."

Mayor Hahn's proposal to increase the number of charter schools in Los Angeles includes:

- Expediting zoning and other city reviews for charter schools.
- Providing incentives to include space for charter schools in new projects.
- Providing city land and facilities for charter schools
- Helping property owners take advantage of incentives for leasing,
selling or giving land to charter schools
- Working with charter schools like the Mayor's Housing and Business Team does with housing developers and businesses to cut through the red tape, build links between schools and businesses and provide financial and other advice

Mayor Hahn has taken an aggressive role in improving Los Angeles schools:

Mayor Hahn works closely with the school district on getting schools built quickly and to form agreements through which the community and schools can share playing fields, gymnasiums and auditoriums. Mayor Hahn has overseen the largest expansion of the LA's BEST program to give more than 20,000 kids a safe place to learn during those crucial after school hours when kids are most vulnerable. Mayor Hahn's Cash for College program has helped more than 20,000 kids the tools they need to pay for college.
