ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN COMMUNITY LEADERS ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR HAHN
Los Angeles City Attorney and mayoral candidate Jim Hahn joined over 100 Asian Pacific American (APA) community leaders who announced their support for his mayoral candidacy.
"To lead this city, the next mayor will have to work tirelessly to build bridges of understanding between every part of our city to effectively address our biggest challenges from education to public safety to economic development," said Hahn to his APA supporters who gathered at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center Plaza in Little Tokyo.
"Jim Hahn has demonstrated over 20 years of leadership in the City of Los Angeles," said Former Los Angeles Harbor Commission President and Airport Commissioner Leland Wong. "He has the ability to serve as a very strong bridge builder and bring people together."
"Every year we have a Nisei Week celebration in Little Tokyo, and for the last 20 years Jim has always come to participate in our activities," said retired LAUSD teacher and current President of the Little Tokyo Business Association Francis Hashimoto. “His leadership and his understanding of our community are qualities that will make him a great mayor for the City of Los Angeles."
"One reason I am here today is because I believe Jim Hahn will be a mayor for everybody," said U.S. Federation of Pilipino American Chamber of Commerce Vice President Efren Abratique.
"For the Korean American community, there was no event more tragic than the 1992 civil unrest," said Korean American Coalition Past President Joseph Ahn. "While many other leaders throughout the city and county shunned our community, Jim Hahn picked up the phone and said 'What can I do to help your community recover?'"
Law Enforcement Association for Asian Pacific Islanders President Daniel Wong also announced his organization’s endorsement of Hahn at the press conference.
As City Attorney, Hahn created an Asian Pacific American Citizens Advisory Group to keep him informed of the community's public safety concerns. He has worked with the Chinatown and Little Tokyo Public Safety Committees and hired special bilingual advocates in the City Attorney's Office's Domestic Violence Unit to assist victims whose first language may not be English.
As Mayor, Hahn supports building new schools to ease overcrowding and increasing access to after school programs by expanding the successful L.A.'s BEST program to every elementary school that does not currently have such a program. He has proposed hiring 1,000 new police to keep communities safe. His economic development plan includes a moratorium on business taxes for the first two years for new small businesses.
