HAHN KICKS-OFF MAYORAL CAMPAIGN
Los Angeles City Attorney Jim Hahn today returned to the elementary school he attended in South Los Angeles to officially kick-off his campaign for mayor. Surrounded by over 50 supporters, Hahn outlined his vision for leading Los Angeles in the new century.
“Now is the time for leadership grown out of taking on the city’s toughest challenges and winning,” said Hahn. “That’s what I’ve done. That’s what I’ll do as Mayor.”
Hahn’s proposals for making Los Angeles an even better place to live and work include: expanding after school programs, extending the hours that school facilities are available for community use, hiring 1,000 new police officers to help keep our streets and neighborhoods safe, expanding partnerships between law enforcement and local communities, fixing the city’s most crowded intersections, and reducing business taxes to help grow our economy.
Los Angeles leaders who joined Hahn at the press conference included Los Angeles City Councilman Alex Padilla, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, and anti-gun violence advocate Ann Reiss Lane.
“Jim is a real leader who finds new solutions to old problems and gets results for all our community,” said Padilla, who has worked with Hahn to reduce gang violence, eliminate illegal tobacco sales to minors, and provide positive opportunities for our young people.
Following the press conference, Hahn lunched with seniors at the Hollywood Multipurpose Senior Center. Hahn spoke to the seniors about his efforts as City Attorney to curb elder abuse.
Hahn toured the Vaughn Learning Center, a public charter school in Pacoima, to see first-hand a successful model for parent and community involvement in our local schools. Under the leadership of principal Dr. Yvonne Chan, the Vaughn Learning Center has built new classrooms to allow for lower class size, established a health clinic to treat students and their siblings, and established a family center for parent volunteers and community outreach programs. After touring the school, Hahn met with local parents to hear their ideas for improving educational opportunities for Los Angeles children.
