COUNTY SUPERVISOR YVONNE BRATHWAITE BURKE ENDORSES JIM HAHN FOR MAYOR
Los Angeles - In his campaign for Mayor, Jim Hahn today continued to solidify his strong support in the African American community by announcing the endorsement of his campaign by County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. As one of the most influential political leaders in Los Angeles, Burke's endorsement of Hahn continues to build momentum for his campaign as it heads in the fall.
"Public service means one thing -- meeting the needs of the men and women you represent. In my 30 years in public service I have always made that the number one priority -- whether it's expanding parks, improving our transit system, looking out for the interests of our county's children, or seeking ways to bring new jobs to our community. Jim Hahn understands this, and has delivered for the people of Los Angeles as City Attorney, and will deliver for this city as its next Mayor," Burke said.
"Jim has taken on tough fights as the City Attorney and has found new solutions to old problems. Problems like gun violence, gangs, domestic violence, and elder abuse. I know he will bring this same energy and innovation to the Mayor's Office and that's why I'm supporting him to be Los Angeles' next Mayor," Burke added.
"I grew up in the Second District watching my father Kenny Hahn serve the people of this District for forty years. Very few people could have filled his shoes, but luckily for the residents of this district, Supervisor Burke was one of them. She is a true leader in this community and I am honored to call her my friend and have her support in my campaign," Hahn said.
"Supervisor Burke and I share the same goals: to build healthy neighborhoods by improving our schools, increasing public safety, and bringing good jobs and good wages to the community. Working with Supervisor Burke and others, we can achieve these goals, and I will as the next Mayor," added Hahn.
Supervisor Burke is serving her second term as County Supervisor for the Second District. She has served two terms as Chair of the Board of Supervisors. Prior to serving on the Board of Supervisors, Burke was the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress where she served for three terms from 1972 to 1978. She had previously served in the California State Assembly. Burke is married to William A. Burke, a Los Angeles businessman, and has a daughter Autumn, and a step-daughter, Christine Burke.
Hahn has also received numerous other endorsements of key organizations and leaders in the African-American community including Congresswoman Maxine Waters; basketball legend and businessman Earvin "Magic" Johnson; Congressman Julian Dixon; Los Angeles City Councilman Nate Holden; Rev. Cecil Murray of First AME; Bishop Charles E. Blake of West Angeles Church of God in Christ; Rev. William Epps of Second Baptist Church; Rev. E.V. Hill of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church; Mayor Bradley advisor Bill Elkins; the Southern California Baptist Ministers Conference; and the Baptist Fellowship Convention.
